Ireland's ambition must go beyond using new technology to make old processes faster in the public service, the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform has said.

Jack Chambers told the Dáil that such technology must be used to redesign services around people, to make public services better and easier to access.

He said €17 million will be provided to the Digital Transformation Fund next year, alongside the ongoing €9m investment in Government digital infrastructure.

The minister said the funding "will support the delivery of simpler, more connected and more accessible public services for people, families and businesses across the country".

He added that there "is perhaps no area where the combination of investment, reform and technology has greater potential to improve people's lives than in our health service."
