EU opens applications for free train passes for 18-year-olds

On Thursday, the European Union opened applications for free travel passes that let 18-year-olds explore Europe, including the Netherlands. The offer is part of DiscoverEU, a program under Erasmus+.

Applications close at midday Central European Time on Oct. 15, and friends can apply together. According to the European Commission, those selected receive a pass for the most environmentally friendly transport available, usually rail, though other modes may be used in some cases.

The pass covers up to seven days of travel within a one-month period and can be used anytime from March 1, 2027, to May 31, 2028. Winners also receive a DiscoverEU discount card for accommodation, culture, sports, local transport, and other services.

The European Commission also said that applicants with a disability or a health condition can receive assistance and support. The Commission also said that the program is meant to let 18-year-olds travel and learn about their European heritage.
