Romy Mars Flexes Her Famous Family on a Filmmaker Ex
by Jason P. Frank · VULTUREIf you’re an aspiring filmmaker, maybe avoid breaking the heart of a Coppola. In her latest song, “Rage,” Romy Mars flexes her iconic family on an ex that’s being rude to her post-breakup. “Now you’re in film school studying movies,” Mars, the daughter of Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars, sings. “When they talk about my family do you lose sleep?” The entire song is a mournful, downbeat ode to a bygone California romance. “At night, I think, What if it lasted?” she wonders. “What if I wasn’t like the other girls you casted / For your weekend at the Beverly Hills Hotel?” Mars has always based her lyrical persona on her privilege (“A-Lister” is basically “Nepo Baby: The Song”), and here she’s flippant about her finances. “Spend a fortune on tennis bracelets / So I look classy, even if I’m totally wasted,” she sings. Sad and wealthy, she’s basically a modern Marie Antoinette.
The music video takes the “film-bro BF” topic to its natural conclusion. It begins with Mars in bed with a boy who has put off his short film project. Suddenly, she gets to star in it. He films her bashing the ground with a shovel, in bunny ears, burning $100 bills, and sticking her thumb out like she’s hitchhiking. During that final shot, she and the boy get in an argument because he wants her to stick her butt out more. It ends with Mars lip-syncing the words “I could go miles just trying to escape / And still want back the rage.” She could even go those miles in a chartered helicopter!
