Helen Mirren Faces a Sinister Literary Visitor in the Trailer for A TALENT FOR MURDER

Getting Helen Mirren to play legendary thriller writer Patricia Highsmith already feels like a good idea. Put her across the table from Alden Ehrenreich as a literary agent whose persuasive tactics take an increasingly sinister turn, and you’ve got the makings of a nasty little psychological game.

Bleecker Street has released the first trailer for A Talent for Murder, a new thriller from director Anton Corbijn. The film takes viewers to Switzerland, where an unexpected visitor comes calling on the acclaimed author of The Talented Mr. Ripley with a proposition involving her most famous creation.

Ehrenreich plays a mysterious young man sent by a New York publisher to convince Highsmith to write one final installment in her Tom Ripley series. She apparently isn’t interested, but he isn’t ready to accept that answer. As his attempts to change her mind intensify, their encounter begins heading into much darker territory.

Highsmith work was filled with manipulation, obsession, deception, and characters capable of doing terrible things when pushed in the right direction. The trailer plays with that territory as Mirren and Ehrenreich circle each other in what looks like an increasingly dangerous battle of wills.

The film also stars Olivia Cooke and Juliet Stevenson. Corbijn’s previously films include Life in 2015, starring Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan, along with Control, The American, and A Most Wanted Man.

His career has also included documentary projects such as U2: The Joshua Tree Tour and Spirits in the Forest, along with a long history of music videos, photography, and short films.

The screenplay comes from Joanna Murray-Smith, who adapted the film from her own story Switzerland. This could make for a wonderfully twisted little thriller if Corbijn can keep tightening the screws.

A Talent for Murder will premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival before Bleecker Street releases the film in select U.S. theaters on October 23, 2026.
