JLI’s Mishnah Booklet Gets a Makeover

The elegant shivah and yahrzeit booklet, long a staple in Chabad houses around the world, is undergoing a major redesign and expansion.

For years, Shluchim across the globe have relied on a small but powerful tool when called to a family in mourning: the Mishnah Neshamah booklet, offered through the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI). This beautifully illuminated, personalized mishnah booklet—featuring the letters of the deceased’s name along with original commentary—arrives at the shliach’s door, ready to be presented to a grieving family during shivah or studied at a shloshim or yahrtzeit event.

Now, this valued resource is undergoing a major redesign and expansion:
1. A Refreshed Visual Identity The booklet’s interior and cover are being redesigned with elegance, making it feel more like a cherished keepsake than a simple pamphlet.

2. Expanded Content New editions will include a personalized selection of Tehilim to be recited at the gravesite of the niftar, insights on some of the mitzvos and customs that are done to benefit the soul of the departed, and a meaningful collection of soul reflections from various Jewish sources.

Mishnah Neshamah was born from a simple but profound insight: When a family experiences loss, even one with little connection to Jewish observance will often turn to a Shliach for comfort and meaning. That moment of vulnerability is also a moment of openness and an invitation to offer something lasting.

The booklet fills that opening. Mishnayos are traditionally studied in memory of the departed as a merit for the aliyas haneshamah. Each mishnah contains the letters of the word neshamah (soul), and the booklet’s unique commentary creates a deeply moving connection between the learning and the loved one being remembered.
