The Ministry of Health has announced that four major hospitals in Yangon are fully prepared to treat patients suffering from heat-related illnesses as temperatures rise.

Hospitals in East Yangon, West Yangon, Hlaing Tharyar, and Thanlyin have arranged additional patient wards, stocked essential medicines and supplies, and trained medical staff to handle heat emergencies in line with treatment guidelines.

Authorities also issued public health advice to prevent heat-related conditions. People are urged to stay in shaded areas, wear light and loose clothing that covers the skin, use umbrellas or hats when outdoors, and drink plenty of water.

The public is advised to avoid direct sun exposure, sudden temperature changes (such as moving quickly between extreme heat and air-conditioned spaces), immediate bathing after sun exposure, and alcohol consumption, which can worsen heat effects.

Common symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, headaches, muscle cramps, fatigue, intense thirst, restlessness, and elevated body temperature. Those affected should rest in a cool place and hydrate.

In severe cases such as heatstroke—marked by loss of consciousness, very high body temperature, or dry, hot skin—patients should receive immediate first aid and be taken to the nearest healthcare facility. High-risk groups include the elderly, children, pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, athletes, and those with alcohol or drug dependency.
