US President Donald Trump reposted on Truth Social an interview Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides gave to Breitbart News, in which Christodoulides said relations between Cyprus and the United States are at their highest level ever.

Christodoulides described the United States as Cyprus’s “closest ally” in defence, security and intelligence, and as its most important partner. He also praised Trump’s approach to international negotiations, saying the US president has a “unique advantage” because “whether you like it or not, you know where you stand” with him.

The Cypriot president said a significant further step in US energy activity in Cyprus’s exclusive economic zone is expected. ExxonMobil and Chevron are already operating in the area, and Cyprus aims to begin exporting natural gas to Europe by late 2027 or early 2028.

On Turkey, Christodoulides called President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan the main obstacle to a settlement of the Cyprus issue, pointing to Ankara’s insistence on a two-state solution. He also accused Turkey of challenging international law and the sovereignty of neighbouring countries.

Christodoulides said Cyprus’s geopolitical orientation is “clearly Western” and that he hopes to visit Trump at the White House soon, repeating that Washington is currently the Republic of Cyprus’s most important partner.
