Heavy Rains Bring Flooding to Northern California
As floodwaters submerged cars and prompted rescues in the state’s far north on Sunday, forecasters warned that Central California would receive heavy rain later in the week.
by https://www.nytimes.com/by/jin-yu-young · NY TimesHeavy rains in Northern California on Sunday triggered flash floods that submerged vehicles and prompted rescues, officials said, as millions of people there and in the central part of the state braced for more bad weather over the next few days.
Several counties in Northern California were under a flood warning on Sunday evening, indicating that flooding was occurring or imminent, according to the National Weather Service. Much of Central California was under a flood watch, meaning that flooding was possible, through Friday.
Shasta County, an inland county in California’s far north, was particularly hard hit by rain on Sunday.
A downpour there began around 1 p.m. About five hours later, some areas had received as much as six inches of rain, forecaster Dakari Anderson of the Weather Service said by phone. More was expected overnight and into the week.
Mr. Anderson said Redding, a city of around 94,000 people that sits about 150 miles by road north of Sacramento, the state capital, saw the heaviest rain and flooding in Shasta County on Sunday. Several vehicles were submerged and officials were dispatched to rescue people who were trapped in floods, he said.
It was unclear how many people had been rescued. No damage to buildings or other infrastructure had been reported, he said.
This is a developing story that will be updated.
