Authorities arrest 18 Chinese nationals in Mongshu-Mongsan area near Thanlwin River; equipment and facilities seized in southern Shan State

The government is reportedly intensifying action against online gambling and financial fraud, including coordinated efforts with international partners. On May 15, security forces detained 18 illegal Chinese nationals near the Thanlwin River close to Loi Saung Taung Village in Mongshu Township, and confiscated materials linked to online gambling activities on the west bank of the river near Hopon Village.
According to reports, a joint security team conducted a search and seizure operation in the Mongshu-Mongsan area of Loi Lam District, southern Shan State, along the west bank of the Thanlwin River—about 26 kilometers southeast of Mongshu town and 11 kilometers southeast of Loi Saung Taung village—at around 9:30 am on May 15, where the 18 individuals were found residing illegally.
In a separate but related operation, another joint team carried out a search along the Thanlwin River around 11 am, approximately 26 kilometers east of Mongsan town and 9 kilometers east of Hopon village. Authorities discovered two damaged dormitories with bunk beds measuring 100 feet by 30 feet, a large commercial tent of the same size, 30 bamboo tents measuring 10 feet by 10 feet, and a bamboo kitchen tent of similar dimensions, all allegedly used in online gambling operations on the west bank of the river.
Investigations are ongoing into the detained individuals, and legal action is being taken in accordance with existing laws. Authorities also stated that those involved in the incident will be identified and prosecuted under the law.
