A pavilion for walking Thingyan is being built on Panchan Road next to Maha Bandoola Park in Yangon for the 2026 Myanmar Traditional Maha Thingyan Festival.

“The mayor’s pavilion is being built in front of the city hall, and a pavilion for walking Thingyan is being built next to the park. This place is a place where walking Thingyan is being held. Last year, the national level of the festival was canceled due to the earthquake. We are happy that preparations are being made for it to be held again this year,” said a nearby resident.

Similarly, the mayor’s pavilion is being built in front of the city hall in front of the city hall for the 2026 Myanmar Traditional Maha Thingyan Festival since March 11.

The festival was canceled due to the earthquake in 2025, and a local said that they welcome the resumption of the festival this year.

"As you know, the festival could not be held last year due to the earthquake. The pavilions that had already been built had to be demolished. I am happy that it will be held again this year. If we do not hold it for a long time, we will forget that the festival is a traditional Myanmar event. I welcome the fact that it will be held again this year. As young people, traditional happiness is something that we should enjoy. But we want them to enjoy it with caution," he continued.

On March 28, 2025, a powerful earthquake centered on Mandalay and Sagaing destroyed many homes and killed more than three thousand people.

Due to this tragic incident, the 2025 Maha Thingyan Festival was canceled and the nearly completed Mayor's Pavilion in front of Yangon City Hall was dismantled, leaving children in some of the wards to enjoy the festivities.

Preparations are underway in Yangon to hold the Myanmar traditional Maha Thingyan Festival again in 2026.
