RBE Train Derails on PyinOoLwin–Gokteik Route After Heavy Rain

An RBE passenger train derailed on the PyinOoLwin–Gokteik section of the Mandalay–Lashio railway on the morning of August 1 after heavy rain caused sand and soil to cover the tracks. No injuries were reported.

The two-car RBE train, operating from PyinOoLwin to Gokteik, left PyinOoLwin Station and derailed at about 8:17 a.m. between PyinOoLwin and Pwekauk stations. The accident occurred near an unauthorized railway crossing linking PyinOoLwin with Moegyoepyit Village, where rain-triggered debris had accumulated on the tracks.

The train was carrying 61 passengers. Myanma Railways said all passengers and staff were unharmed. Passengers were transported back to PyinOoLwin by another RBE train, arriving at 11:11 a.m., and their ticket fares were fully refunded.

Railway officials and maintenance crews reached the site at around 9:30 a.m. and immediately began rerailing the derailed carriage and repairing the track, with efforts underway to reopen the railway line the same day.
