The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) has warned that a low-pressure area over the northwestern Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure system, increasing the likelihood of heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas across parts of Myanmar.

According to the DMH's 10:30 am observation on July 4, the system over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and the adjoining coasts of northern Odisha and West Bengal has strengthened significantly.

The department forecasts scattered rain and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy rainfall, from July 4 to 12 in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Bago, Upper Sagaing, Ayeyawady and Tanintharyi regions, as well as Kachin, Kayin, Chin, Mon and Rakhine states.

The DMH also warned of occasional strong winds and rough seas along Myanmar's coast and offshore waters. During thunderstorms, wind speeds could reach 30 to 35 mph, while wave heights are expected to range between 9 and 11 feet.

The strengthened southwest monsoon, combined with the intensified low-pressure system, may trigger heavy rainfall, strong winds, flash floods and landslides. Residents in hilly and mountainous areas are advised to remain alert for possible landslides, while those living near small rivers and streams should take precautions against flooding and overflowing waterways. The department also urged domestic airlines, as well as operators of coastal and offshore fishing vessels and ships navigating Myanmar's coastal and offshore waters, to remain vigilant and take the necessary safety precautions throughout the period of adverse weather.
