Driver arrested after two pedestrians killed on expressway

A driver has been arrested and charged after his vehicle struck and killed two pedestrians on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway and he allegedly fled the scene, according to the Expressway Maintenance, Repair and Supervision Committee.

The incident occurred at around 8:35 pm. on September 29 between mileposts 68/4 and 68/5 on the Yangon-bound lane. A black Toyota Noah travelling from Nay Pyi Taw towards Yangon hit two men from behind as they were walking along the roadside.

Both men died at the scene. The driver allegedly abandoned the vehicle without reporting the accident to the Expressway Police and fled.

He was arrested at around 12:30 am. on September 30 near milepost 69/4 while attempting to leave the area.

The driver has been charged under Sections 304(a) and 202 of the Penal Code.

Authorities reminded motorists that they must report accidents to the nearest Expressway Police post or station and remain for investigation. Drivers who flee an accident may lose legal protection available under the Expressways Law and face criminal charges.
