Heavy Rains Trigger Flooding in Five Townships Across Kachin State

Heavy rainfall in Kachin State has caused flooding in five townships, local residents said on June 22.

Flooding has been reported in parts of Mohnyin Township, Hpakant Township, Mogaung Township, Namti and Hain towns in Kachin State, with rescue operations currently underway in affected areas.

According to rescue teams, the Nantin and Nan Yin streams in Mogaung have risen above danger levels, forcing more than 10,000 people to evacuate.

In Hpakant Town, overflowing waters from the Uru Creek have inundated several urban wards. Residents said floodwaters are higher than last year because many tributaries have not been properly cleared and maintained.

A local journalist from Hpakant wrote on social media that continuous rain has persisted for more than a week. Low-lying houses have been flooded, creating food shortages and difficulties for residents. Although some assistance is being provided, needs remain substantial.

Flooding and road disruptions have also been reported in other towns and villages. In the Indawgyi area, farmland has been eroded and large tracts of agricultural land have been repeatedly covered by mud and silt.
