Navy chief flags need for self-reliance amid changing nature of warfare

Self-reliance in defence manufacturing, or ‘Aatmanirbharta’, is a strategic necessity for India, Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan said on Tuesday at the Delhi Defence Dialogue. He said the Navy must be capable of fighting, sustaining operations and adapting without being constrained by external dependencies.

Highlighting the changing nature of warfare, Swaminathan said technological advantages at the beginning of a conflict may not last as technology evolves rapidly and the time available to detect, decide and respond continues to shrink. He also noted that technology has become democratised and is now accessible to both “good and bad boys”.
