Wontumi Didn’t Go Down For Galamsey” – NPP’s Opoku Amponsah
by Stephen Zoure · MyNewsGh.comNew Patriotic Party (NPP) Communication Team member George Opoku Amponsah has rejected claims that Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, was convicted of illegal mining, insisting that no such evidence was established before the court.
Speaking on Oyerepa Radio, Mr. Amponsah argued that public discussions surrounding the case have created the false impression that Wontumi’s prison sentence stemmed from a conviction for engaging in galamsey activities.
“There was no evidence presented before the court that Chairman Wontumi was engaged in galamsey. His prison sentence was not based on any conviction for illegal mining,” he said.
According to him, it is inaccurate to portray the court’s decision as proof that the NPP chairman personally participated in illegal mining operations.
Mr. Amponsah further argued that the country’s illegal mining challenge extends beyond a single individual, stressing that many others have also been implicated in the practice.
“Wontumi is not the only one guilty of this galamsey issue,” he stated.
He urged the public to distinguish between allegations, evidence presented before the court and the legal basis for any sentence imposed, saying discussions on the matter should remain grounded in the facts of the case.
