A 28-year-old software engineer died by suicide after jumping from the 43rd floor of Supernova building in Uttar Pradesh's Noida on Saturday. Police said he had been battling depression and was under stress over family disputes, his child's medical expenses and debt.

The deceased, Sambhav Jain, was a resident of Manesar in Gurugram. He had come alone to stay at an Airbnb in the building and had booked the room online for one day.

Police said their preliminary investigation, including questioning of Sambhav's family, has brought several factors to light. These include his prolonged depression, a dispute with his wife, expenses related to the treatment of his premature son and financial liabilities.

WHAT DID SAMBHAV'S FAMILY TELL POLICE?

According to the police, Sambhav married in 2024 and the couple had a son in 2025. The child was born prematurely in the seventh month of pregnancy and required prolonged medical treatment.

His family told police that around Rs 40 lakh had already been spent on the child's treatment, while further medical expenses running into lakhs were still being incurred.

A few months after the child's birth, Sambhav and his wife developed differences. His wife subsequently filed a divorce case in court.

According to police, the two sides later reached a settlement. While his wife had initially sought Rs 1 crore, the settlement was finalised at around Rs 15 lakh.

The family told police that an initial payment of around Rs 7 lakh had already been made to his wife on behalf of Sambhav and his family. A second instalment of approximately Rs 7.50 lakh was still pending.

Police also found that Sambhav was dealing with other debts, adding to his financial stress.

POLICE DENY RS 3-CRORE ALIMONY CLAIM

Claims that Sambhav was facing an alimony payment of Rs 3 crore have circulated on social media following his death.

However, police officer Sumnesh Kumar said the claim was incorrect. According to information obtained from Sambhav's family, the divorce settlement involved approximately Rs 15 lakh.

The police are continuing to verify the circumstances surrounding the case and are in communication with the family.

SAMBHAV SPOKE ABOUT DEPRESSION, SUICIDAL THOUGHTS

SHO Sumnesh Kumar said police found that Sambhav had discussed his depression and suicidal thoughts with his father through chat messages in the three or four days before his death.

His father had asked him to return home and assured him that the family would handle the situation.

Police also found that Sambhav had recorded a video on his mobile phone before the incident. Officers are examining the video, the chats and other available evidence as part of the investigation.

According to information emerging during the initial inquiry, Sambhav had also been missing from home for four days before the incident.

Sambhav was his parents' only son and had a younger sister. Sambhav's child is currently staying with the family, who are taking care of him.

WHAT HAPPENED AT SUPERNOVA?

Sambhav had arrived at the Supernova complex at around 3 pm on Friday after booking an Airbnb for one day. Police said he was alone in the room.

On Saturday afternoon, he was seen on the outer ledge of a balcony on a higher floor. An AC repair team working at a nearby flat noticed him hanging from the balcony railing and tried to save him.

Despite their attempts, Sambhav jumped from the 43rd floor.

A video recorded from the ground shows him standing on the outer ledge of the high-rise as people watched in alarm and tried to alert security personnel. Bystanders can be heard discussing his position and calling for help.

Police said Sambhav died at the spot after suffering fatal injuries in the fall. The impact was so severe that the man's body was split into two parts.

Police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. The body was taken into custody and a panchnama was prepared before post-mortem proceedings.

A forensic team also inspected the scene and collected evidence. Police are examining CCTV footage from the building and surrounding areas.

POLICE PROBE DEPRESSION, FAMILY DISPUTE AND DEBT

Police said Sambhav had been under mental stress and was also troubled by debt. His family told investigators about the financial burden caused by his son's medical treatment and the ongoing divorce settlement.

Sambhav also reportedly weighed around 140 kilograms and had health problems linked to his weight, which caused him anxiety.

The police are investigating all these aspects to establish the circumstances that led to his death. The exact reason behind the suicide remains under investigation.
