Dublin crèche worker to be honoured for bravery
by Samantha Libreri, https://www.facebook.com/rtenews/ · RTE.ieDublin City Council has agreed to honour the crèche worker Leanne Flynn for the bravery and courage she showed during the Parnell Square attack in November 2023.
An event in the autumn will honour the role played by Ms Flynn on the day in trying to protect a number of young children from being stabbed, during which she received stab wounds.
A reception will also be held to acknowledge all the bystanders who intervened on the day of the attack.
At their monthly meeting the Council also agreed to hold an event to honour the Shamrock Rovers captain and Cape Verde defender Roberto 'Pico' Lopes for his performance at the World Cup.
His team, the smallest nation ever to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament held off Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, before losing 3-2 in extra time in a closely fought tie with World Cup holders Argentina in a World Cup performance that garnered international attention.
A ceremony will be held on 18 July at the player's first football club, Lourdes Celtic in his native Crumlin.
Dublin City Council also agreed a motion condemning the scheduling the Republic of Ireland’s Nation League fixtures against Israel in September and October.
Under the motion which will be sent the the FAI leadership and the Minister for Sport, the Council calls on the FAI to take full institutional responsibility, show true moral leadership and withdraw the Republic of Ireland from these matches
The motion was agreed without debate.
