Rajasthan Civic Polls 2026: BJP Extends Its Dominance Across Urban Rajasthan

The BJP has emerged as the clear front-runner in Rajasthan’s 2026 municipal elections, building commanding leads across the state’s most important urban centres as counting continues in one of the biggest civic contests ahead of the 2028 Assembly election.

The Scale of the Contest

Rajasthan went to the polls across 309 urban local bodies — 10 municipal corporations, 51 municipal councils and 248 municipalities — contesting more than 10,000 councillor posts. Voting took place in two phases on September 9 and 11, with counting beginning on September 14.

BJP Leads Where It Matters Most

The saffron party has raced ahead in six of the state’s ten municipal corporations, sweeping up leads in the capital Jaipur along with Ajmer, Alwar, Udaipur, Kota and Bhilwara — a spread that covers the state’s most politically significant urban centres. In Jaipur, the BJP built a commanding early lead of 63 wards to Congress’s 44, reaffirming its hold over the capital. In Kota, the party’s dominance was even sharper, winning 20 of the first 24 wards declared.

This performance builds on the momentum the BJP has carried since its decisive 2023 Assembly win under Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, suggesting the party’s support base in urban Rajasthan remains firmly intact.

A Competitive Picture in a Few Pockets

Congress managed to hold on to leads in three corporations — Jodhpur, Pali and Bikaner — with Jodhpur ending in an exact 44-44 tie and 11 seats going to independents who will now play a role in forming that civic body’s leadership. Pali saw an early Congress lead, with the party ahead in 15 of 65 wards counted at one stage.

Why It Matters

With the BJP leading in a majority of Rajasthan’s municipal corporations and posting strong ward margins in the state’s biggest cities, the results point to continued public confidence in the party’s governance since 2023. The State Election Commission, Rajasthan, remains the official authority for the results, with final, certified ward-wise tallies expected once counting concludes across all 309 urban local bodies.
