Man missing since 2022 identified after foot found in shoe in Vlaardingen canal

Police have identified a man whose foot was discovered in a shoe in a canal in Vlaardingen in August. The foot belonged to a man from Delft who has been missing since June 17, 2022, police said Monday. Authorities said that he did not die as a result of a crime.

The discovery followed a recent recovery of a body from the same canal where the foot had been found.

Forensic investigation confirmed that the foot matched the body, which has now been formally identified as the missing Delft man, who was 42 at the time of his disappearance. The man’s relatives have been notified of the discovery and identification.

According to the investigation, the man was last seen in Schiedam, visiting a friend. He was expected to return to Delft late that evening by public transportation but never arrived home. His mother reported him missing after he failed to make contact and could not be reached by phone.

Following the initial discovery of the foot in August, authorities conducted an extensive search of the canal for additional body parts. None were found at the time, but several months later, the rest of the body was recovered.
