We have to play better, Xavi reacts to Netherlands win over Serbia
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineXavi secured his first victory as Netherlands head coach after his side defeated Serbia 2-1 on Sunday, but the Spaniard said the team must improve tactically despite the result.
The victory followed a 1-1 draw against Germany in Xavi’s first match in charge and gave the Netherlands three points from the difficult away fixture in Serbia.
Xavi said the result was important but admitted his side needed to produce a better performance, particularly in their pressing during the first half.
“It is always the most important thing to get the three points,” Xavi stated.
“I am happy that we succeeded in that.
“But we have to play better, because certainly in the first half we did not do well in terms of pressing,” Xavi stated.
Mexx Meerdink was the standout performer for the Netherlands, scoring both goals to secure the victory.
The AZ Alkmaar striker’s brace proved decisive, while Xavi praised the forward’s overall contribution and his ability to fit into the team’s approach.
