12th January was the date to provisionally announce the squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. 6 teams have submitted their teams with the exception of India and Pakistan. The India Cricket Team reportedly sought an extension to delay their announcement. Now as per the latest reports by PTI, it is believed that the India squad announcement will be held after the Vijay Hazare Trophy finals.
The BCCI Selection Committee is set to sit and discuss the team on 19th January, i.e. a day after the Vijay Hazare Trophy Finals. And it can be expected that the squad announcement will be made on that very day. It is a good thing that the selectors are willing to wait till the conclusion of VHT so as to select the best 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy.
When is India Champions Trophy squad announcement?
After missing out on the ODI World Cup Trophy, the Men in Blue are determined to feature their best squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. And as a result, the BCCI Selection Committee hasn’t yet released India’s squad. In fact, they are willing to wait for a couple of days to wait for the Vijay Hazare Trophy to conclude.
Rohit Sharma would be leading the charge for the Indians. It will be the last opportunity for the Hitman to win an ICC Trophy for the country. In 2023 India came close to lifting the trophy only to lose the finals to Australia in Ahmedabad. Despite poor performances, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are to be selected in the ICC tournament.
On the other hand, the think tank is currently worried about two bowlers. Both Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah are recovering from their injuries. Bumrah suffered back stress in the IND vs AUS 5th Test in Sydney. Meanwhile, Kuldeep is recovering from his groin injury. It remains to be seen if both get selected or not.
