Gavdos Sea Tragedy: 25 Feared Missing After 51 Rescued

A major search and rescue operation is continuing south of Gavdos after 51 foreign nationals were rescued from a partially submerged dinghy, with no trace yet found of an estimated 25 people reported missing.

The Hellenic Coast Guard said the 51 survivors were located about 38 nautical miles south of Gavdos late Sunday and brought safely ashore.

They were transported in two groups to Paleochora and Agia Galini in Crete, where they underwent registration and received first aid, food and other basic assistance.

The rescued group is expected to be transferred to the reception centre in Agyia, Chania, for processing before being moved to mainland Greece.

During the operation, another foreign national was recovered unconscious from the sea and taken to Chania General Hospital for medical treatment.

According to accounts given by those rescued, 77 people were aboard the dinghy when it began its journey. Authorities have therefore launched an extensive search for approximately 25 people who remain unaccounted for.

The operation, coordinated by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, remains underway in the area, with multiple search and rescue assets involved.

Authorities have yet to determine the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of those still missing.
