Myanmar and Laos Sign Deal to Study 2,790MW Mekong Hydropower Project

Myanmar and Laos have signed a joint agreement to carry out a feasibility study for hydropower projects along the Mekong River on their shared border, marking a key step in expanding bilateral energy cooperation.

The agreement was signed on 4 July at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Vientiane during the Myanmar President’s state goodwill visit to Laos. It follows a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the electricity sector between the two countries.

Officials from both governments described the project as an important symbol of Myanmar–Laos friendship that could strengthen energy security in the border region and support renewable energy goals across the Greater Mekong Subregion and ASEAN. They also pledged to ensure the project complies with both countries’ laws, regulations and environmental and social standards.

The feasibility study agreement was signed by Myanmar’s Primus Sapphire Power Co., Ltd. and Laos’ Phongsupthavy Group Sole Co., Ltd. The proposed hydropower project is expected to have an installed capacity of up to 2,790 megawatts, with the study scheduled for completion within 34 months.
