Modern air-conditioned DEMU train begins service on Yangon–Pyay railway line

Yangon- Myanmar Railways has launched a modern air-conditioned Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train service on the Yangon–Pyay railway line, with the new trains officially beginning operations on July 31.

The inauguration ceremony was held at Yangon Central Railway Station on Thursday ( July 31) morning. The event was attended by Union Minister for Transport and Communications U Mya Htun Oo, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Aung Naing Thu, and other government officials.

The new DEMU service will operate as a daily round-trip between Yangon and Pyay. Train No. 73 departs Yangon Central Station at 5:30 a.m. and arrives in Pyay at 11:30 a.m. Train No. 74 leaves Pyay at 1:00 p.m. and reaches Yangon at 7:00 p.m., allowing passengers to complete a same-day return journey.

The trains will stop at the intermediate stations of Tanyingon, Thayarwady, Letpadan, Minhla, Kyaukpin Kauk, Natalin, and Paungde.

Each DEMU train consists of two upper-class coaches and four first-class coaches, providing seating for 290 passengers in total, including 66 upper-class and 224 first-class seats.

Ticket prices for the full Yangon–Pyay journey are set at 20,000 kyats for upper class and 15,000 kyats for first class. The journey takes approximately six hours in each direction.

In addition, Myanmar Railways announced that tickets for the existing Yangon–Pyay express air-brake services, Train No. 71 (up) and Train No. 72 (down), will also be available through the Online Railways Ticketing and Payment (ORTP) system. Passengers can purchase tickets up to seven days in advance for end-to-end journeys and five days in advance for travel between intermediate stations.
