Telematics GPS devices installed on more than 6,000 vehicles operating on Yangon-Mandalay expressway

Passenger vehicles and cargo vehicles carrying only the 14 types of goods permitted under the regulations will be allowed to use the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway only after being equipped with the telematics GPS system, according to reports.

The installation and service provision of telematics GPS devices on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway began in June 2024. As of September 9, telematics devices had been installed on 3,525 passenger vehicles and 2,512 cargo vehicles.

In addition, the Telematics Command and Control Center at the Nay Pyi Taw junction toll gate provides a 24-hour telephone warning service to ensure that passenger vehicles travelling on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway maintain the prescribed speed limit of 90 kilometres per hour and do not stop in areas where stopping is prohibited.

Deputy Minister for Construction U Myo Myint inspected the operations of the Telematics Command and Control Center on September 9.

He then inspected the CCTV rooms, toll collection systems, technological facilities, vehicle weighing and passage operations, and toll gate buildings at toll gates along the Yangon-Nay Pyi Taw section of the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway.

During the inspection, he instructed officials to carry out maintenance of the toll gate buildings in accordance with prescribed standards; closely supervise vehicles to ensure that they do not exceed the permitted weight limits; keep the TFI display boards, barrier arms, weighing scales, CCTV cameras, computers and related equipment in good working condition at all times; promptly report any damage to equipment; and ensure that records and statistics on road usage fees collected are systematically maintained and accurate.

During the trip, he also inspected asphalt concrete paving works, road and bridge maintenance works, tree-planting activities along the middle and both sides of the expressway, and the construction site of the Swa Creek Bridge (outbound carriageway), where he gave necessary instructions concerning the works.
