In Short

  • Apple is likely gearing up for big Siri update
  • New Siri may give auto-delete option for chats
  • It will likely be launched later this year

Apple is expected to release a revamped Siri later this year. The company signed a deal with Google to use the latter’s Gemini AI models to power Siri. This would bring Apple into a direct contest against AI chatbots like ChatGPT. Though, as per reports, the Cupertino giant is likely to continue to focus on ensuring user privacy with an auto-delete feature.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the revamped Siri may include an auto-delete option for chat history. That is, you may be able to keep Siri conversations for 30 days, one year, or forever. This is similar to options that Apple provides in its Messages app.

Keep in mind that this auto-delete option will likely be part of a new standalone Siri app that is believed to be in the works. The new app could potentially give you a similar experience to other AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini while using Siri.

Usually, AI chatbots depend on conversation history to give better suited replies to users. Though companies are now also releasing incognito modes for chats with AI. Meta was the latest one to release an incognito chat window for Meta AI.

Apple’s new Siri, here is what we know

The revamped Siri is expected to be one of the biggest updates to Apple’s personal assistant ever. The new Siri will likely be able to handle complex queries, which it currently delegates to ChatGPT as part of a deal with OpenAI. Though this deal is rumoured to have caused tensions between the two companies.

Apart from getting a new standalone Siri app, users may also get a new “Search or Ask” shortcut. This mode may be activated by swiping down from the top centre of the screen. It is believed that you may be able to choose whether the app opens to a grid of prior conversations or to a new chat each time it is launched.

While Apple is expected to use Google’s new AI models to power Siri, it is unclear if the company will rely on Google’s compute power to run the new model. Previous reports indicate that Apple may ask Google to run Siri on separate servers that would meet the Cupertino giant’s privacy requirements.

When will Apple launch the new Siri?

It is expected that Apple may reveal the new Siri during the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June this year. Though you may only get your hands on it with the iOS 27 update that will likely arrive with the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro models in September.

On the rollout, the report states that internal test versions of iOS 27 carry a beta label for the new Siri and include a toggle to leave the Siri beta. It is possible that at the time of launch, the new Siri may come with the beta tag.
