- An unspoken expectation to stay available often cuts into personal time

A simple workplace story is going viral for all the right reasons. It shows how one employee used a bit of humour to explain a serious issue; people cannot work like machines all the time.
These days, working extra hours has almost become normal in many offices.
Leaving on time is often judged, and last-minute tasks just before logging out are quite common. Over time, this can mess up personal life and lead to stress and burnout.
WHY ARE LATE WORK HOURS BECOMING SO COMMON?
In many companies, there is an unspoken rule to always be available. Employees are expected to stretch their workday if needed, even if it means staying back late. This slowly eats into personal time and makes it hard for people to rest or spend time with family.
WHAT DID THE EMPLOYEES SAY TO HIS BOSS?
In a post shared by career coach Simon Ingari, an employee handled the situation in a smart way. He showed his boss a picture and asked what it was.
When the boss said it was a robot, the employee asked a few questions: does it have a family, does it need sleep, does it have responsibilities? The boss said no to everything.
That is when the employee made his point. He said he is not a robot and needs proper rest, breaks, and time outside work. He also reminded his boss how he was often given work late at night, sometimes even close to midnight.
WHY DID THIS STRIKE A CHORD WITH PEOPLE?
The conversation ended on a strong note. The employee said expecting someone to work all the time is like treating them like a machine.
He even joked that he could share robot resumes if that is what the company wanted.
A lot of people online related to this. The story is simple, but it clearly shows why setting boundaries at work is important. It is not about refusing work, it is about having a life outside it too.
