An Indian man based in the US shared how a little-known feature on Wikipedia completely changed the way he looked at the world around him, and the internet is just as fascinated by it.

The post was shared on X by Neil Agarwal, who described stumbling upon what he called “one of the coolest features on the internet.”

“I accidentally discovered one of the coolest features on the internet,” he wrote, before explaining, “the Wikipedia app has a ‘nearby’ feature that shows Wikipedia articles around your location!”

Curious, he decided to try it out, and quickly found himself hooked.

“I opened it and instantly fell into a rabbit hole of random places, local history and weird things around me,” he added, capturing the kind of unexpected curiosity the feature sparked.

The feature essentially mapped out Wikipedia entries based on your surroundings, turning even the most familiar neighbourhoods into a layered map of stories, landmarks, and hidden history, which were things most people might walk past without ever noticing.

“Try it and tell me what shows up near you,” he urged, inviting others to explore their own surroundings in a completely new way.

Take a look at the post here:

His discovery was adored by several users, especially those who had discovered the feature earlier and shared similar experiences.

“Was also shocked when I discovered this (I think) a few years ago!” one user commented, echoing the sense of surprise.

Another pointed out how it changes perspective entirely: “The locals who already know all this history are the real winners.”

Several others admitted they had been using it for a while but were still amazed at how underrated it remained. “I show this to people all the time, and it always blows their minds, no one knows about it!!” one user wrote.

Social media users also discussed how the discovery wasn’t just about a cool app feature, but it was about rethinking how people moved through the world.
