Three months into living with the Harley-Davidson X440 T, one thing has become abundantly clear. This is a motorcycle defined less by outright performance figures and more by the way its engine makes every ride feel unhurried. The 440cc, single-cylinder, air-oil-cooled motor is happiest in the meat of its mid-range. There is a reassuring pulse every time you twist the throttle, accompanied by a deep exhaust note that never feels artificial. It builds speed with an effortless surge rather than an explosive rush, encouraging you to short-shift and let the generous torque do the work. Around town, that translates into fewer gear changes and stress-free commuting, while on the highway it settles into an easy rhythm that suits long distances remarkably well. What has impressed us most over the past month is the engine’s refinement, especially compared to the previous iteration. The ride-by-wire throttle delivers crisp yet progressive responses, making low-speed manoeuvres smoother. Cruising between 80kmph and 100kmph feels natural, with the motor spinning comfortably and vibrations remaining fairly well contained. Venture beyond that and a familiar tingle begins to creep through the bars and footpegs. The X440 T still isn’t a motorcycle that urges you to chase the horizon at triple-digit speeds. Instead, it reminds you that enjoyable motorcycling is often about the journey rather than the pace. So far, its biggest strength remains unchanged: an engine with genuine character, one that leaves a lasting impression every time you thumb the starter.
