Posing as a customer care executive, conman dupes senior citizen of ₹94,000
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduPosing as a customer care executive of an internet service provider, a conman offered to help a 71-year-old woman and made away with her saving worth ₹94,000 through an online transaction on Monday.
The victim, Geetha Menon, a resident of MEG Colony on Jeevanahalli Road filed a complaint with the East Division Cyber Crime Police. In her complaint, Ms. Menon said that she was searching for the customer care contact number to fix her internet connection problem, online. A few minutes later, she received a call from a person who identified himself as Rahul Biswas, offering to help her sort out the issue. He soon came on a video call on WhatsApp and made her download a third party app due to which her mobile screen was visible to him.
The accused asked her to open bank account app which complainant refused to do so, following which he disconnected the call. Next day when she ordered food on a home delivery app and paid through a payment gateway, the caller who had accessed her mobile phone notifications, noticed the pin number and withdraw ₹94,000.
Based on the complaint and the details shared by the complainant, the police are trying to track down the accused. Police have advised people to neither share any personal details to unknown people nor download any links or files they receive from random numbers.
